Kehena, The Big Island

Welcome to Kehena, Hawaii—the “hippie” part of Hawaii! Tucked along the remote southeastern coast of the Big Island, Kehena is a place where lush jungle meets volcanic shores, and a free-spirited community thrives. Known for its off-grid lifestyle, artistic gatherings, and deep connection to nature, this region offers a glimpse into a slower, more intentional way of life.

Life in Kehena moves at its own rhythm, shaped by the Kehena black sand beach, and the winding Red Road —a breathtaking drive through dense tropical forest and rugged lava fields. The Pohoiki Hot Springs offer a heated ocean soak, while further inland Kulaniapia Falls provide a stunning waterfall retreat. Locals and visitors alike embrace the area’s laid-back energy, whether soaking in warm tidal pools, exploring hidden jungle trails, or gathering for music and dance under the stars.
